Uruguayan dark metal duo Upon Shadows has unveiled their new single, "The Great Shadow", offering a first glimpse of their forthcoming studio album, Golden Flame, set for release in 2027.
As an introduction to the album's thematic core, "The Great Shadow" explores awakening consciousness, rebellion, transformation, and the relentless pursuit of hidden knowledge. Rooted in symbolism and esoteric thought, the track continues the band's tradition of blending philosophical depth with an evocative poetic sensibility.
Commenting on the new release, the duo states: "'The Great Shadow' is about the awakening of consciousness and, with it, the inevitable rebellion; the pursuit of the most arcane and primordial forms of knowledge, from a distinctly Luciferian perspective, without neglecting the poetic dimension that constitutes a large part of the heart of Upon Shadows. Musically, it is pure darkness: dense, unpretentious, and true to our style."
Musically, the song marks the beginning of a new chapter for Upon Shadows, combining the duo's signature darkness with an immersive and atmospheric soundscape. At the same time, it lays the groundwork for the ideas and motifs that will shape Golden Flame, where mythology, symbolism, and philosophical reflection are expected to play a central role once again.
Although the full concept behind the forthcoming album remains undisclosed, "The Great Shadow" provides an intriguing preview of what listeners can expect from the band's next creative journey.
The single was composed by Tamara Picardo, who also oversaw the recording and mixing process. Bass performances were recorded by Natalia Arocena, while mastering duties were entrusted to Tony Lindgren at Sweden's renowned Fascination Street Studios. Link
