Australian dream pop/trip-hop duo Mystic Tea Party have unveiled their debut full-length album, Slipstream, alongside a mesmerising video for the record's standout track, "The Knife". Blending shimmering dream pop textures with propulsive breakbeats, the song surges forward on driving basslines, guitar-led melodies, and hazy, ethereal vocals, resulting in an intoxicating rush of nostalgic yet forward-thinking sound.
Comprised of Blume and Sebastian, Mystic Tea Party navigate a wide sonic spectrum across the album's eleven tracks. Slipstream effortlessly drifts between alternative rock, trip-hop, electronica, dream pop, and breakbeat-fuelled experimentation, weaving together distorted guitars, deep low-end grooves, electronic rhythms, and atmospheric vocal layers into a cohesive and immersive listening experience.
A testament to the duo's artistic independence, Slipstream was written, recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered entirely by the band in their hometown of Melbourne, Australia.
Speaking about the album, Mystic Tea Party describe it as "an album about love and obsession, desire and identity, and how change pulls you along whether you're ready or not." Those themes resonate throughout the record, which balances introspective moments with expansive, cinematic soundscapes.
Particular attention falls on "The Knife", a vibrant and emotionally charged track that encapsulates the adventurous spirit of the album. The duo explains: "'The Knife' is a fast-paced, nostalgic electro fantasy, bursting with playful, chaotic energy and sugary, otherworldly sounds. Beneath its frenetic production lies a sapphic love story between a woman and the universe itself, personified as a divine feminine force. An exploration of surrendering to the unknown, embracing the infinite possibilities of creation and opening yourself up to the universe's limitless creative energy."
With Slipstream, Mystic Tea Party deliver a captivating debut that refuses to be confined by genre boundaries, embracing both electronic experimentation and dreamlike atmospherics while exploring themes of transformation, connection, and self-discovery.
