Finnish melancholic metal outfit KantalaSyndrooma have unveiled the first single and accompanying video from their forthcoming debut record, Aavan suon tuolle puolen (lit. Beyond the Vast Marsh), scheduled for release on 6 November via Inverse Records.
The story behind KantalaSyndrooma is closely linked to the legacy of pioneering Finnish melancholic metal act Lyijykomppania, whose journey came to an end in 2022 following the passing of founding drummer Esa Moilanen. Determined to carry that spirit forward, musicians who had performed with Lyijykomppania over the years established KantalaSyndrooma in 2023. Rather than serving as a tribute project, the ensemble has chosen to forge its own artistic identity, although audiences may still encounter the occasional Lyijykomppania composition during live appearances.
Following a period of quiet preparation, the group is now offering listeners a first glimpse into its debut full-length with the release of the video single "Viinanpolttajien laulu" (lit. Moonshiners' Song).
Guitarist and songwriter Lindström sheds light on the inspiration behind the track: "While composing the song, an idea for the lyrics started taking shape in my mind, which in turn sparked an idea for the video; it was an efficient process in that sense, having three ideas swirling around at once. 'Viinanpolttajien laulu' is perhaps the album's most lighthearted track, even though the subject matter is grim—we are in the ninth winter of the nuclear winter following a nuclear war. A group of 'jolly' men have retreated into the wild to escape the post-nuclear world, taking their moonshine stills and other essentials with them—and the forest certainly offers plenty of wood to burn. And although there is a glimmer of hope that the sun might appear again someday, there is little desire to return to that wretched world, as long as the booze keeps flowing and they can occasionally shout their lungs out into the dark forest".
While attention is currently focused on Aavan suon tuolle puolen, KantalaSyndrooma are already looking ahead. New material is reportedly in development, though whether the next offering will emerge as a full-length release or an EP remains to be seen. Link
