Finnish progressive folk/black metal act Jotungrav today unveiled their debut full‑length Elegi via Inverse Records.
Elegi (Swedish for "elegy") sees the band move further towards progressive melodic death metal, while still retaining elements of their original blackened folk metal inspiration. Grand orchestrations, dark melancholic passages, and atmospheric textures remain present throughout, yet the album amplifies the grandeur, heroic lead melodies, and epic arrangements found in Jotungrav's earlier material.
Rather than offering folky tavern songs, Elegi unfolds as an atmospheric musical journey, where Norse paganism and spirituality intersect with both ancient and modern philosophy. The band emphasise constant musical evolution, with no predetermined goals for their releases; the final compositions emerged organically over a year of experimentation. The album's themes follow the same path, centring on philosophical reflections on humanity, suffering, perseverance, and the Norse pantheon in the background.
The record was composed in multiple stages, with several songs rewritten extensively. Initially seven‑ or eight‑minute pieces expanded beyond ten minutes, blending calm acoustic interludes with blazing blast beats and grandiose orchestral melodies. The result is a dynamic, cinematic package that will appeal to fans of Finsterforst, Moonsorrow, Wolfheart, and Rotting Christ.
Jotungrav is the brainchild of singer‑songwriter Matias Stenman, combining black metal and folk metal within a progressive framework. The project began in 2015, though much early material was later discarded. Jotungrav truly materialised in 2022 with the completion of the single "Drängen", featuring contributions from fellow Sargassus members Matias Rokio (percussion) and Teemu Leskinen (mixing and mastering). Subsequent work produced the single "Ulven" and laid the foundation for Elegi. The band draw inspiration from early‑2000s to 2010s Viking/pagan metal and mythology, with lyrics focusing on philosophical and symbolic explorations of humanity. As Jotungrav evolved, their sound moved closer to progressive, melodic folk metal, with black metal influences taking a smaller role. On Elegi, the songs stretch into long, dynamic epics that guide the listener through war-torn landscapes of the ancient world. Link
