The French trio Cold Cause—uniting the distinct creative forces of Luiça (vocals), Bruno (synths, machines), and Mathieu (guitar)—return with their new single and video, “Road”, a track that further cements their place among the most intriguing newcomers in the post‑punk and dark electronic underground.
Cold Cause emerged in 2024 from an unexpected artistic collision: an experimental performance dedicated to German conceptual artist Joseph Beuys. What began as a one‑off collaboration quickly revealed a rare chemistry between the three musicians. From this spark, the project evolved into a fully formed entity—one that thrives at the intersection of post‑punk tension, EBM pulse, and avant‑garde sonic exploration. Their sound resonates with echoes of Lebanon Hanover, Boy Harsher, DAF, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk, yet remains unmistakably their own.
At the heart of the band is Luiça, whose vocal presence shifts effortlessly between icy detachment, rhythmic spoken cadence, and warm, vulnerable tones. Her delivery channels both melancholy and defiance. Bruno’s synth work provides the backbone—hypnotic basslines, martial beats, and enveloping electronic textures—while Mathieu’s guitar injects a raw, human edge, weaving dissonant atmospheres and mournful melodies through the electronic framework.
On stage, Cold Cause transform into a charged, magnetic force. Their live performances are driven by Luiça’s commanding presence and the trio’s tightly interlocked energy, offering a set that is as visceral as it is immersive.
Their forthcoming self-titled debut album, released on 21 March via Manic Depression Records, spans nine tracks, each exploring a different facet of their sonic identity. Among the dance‑leaning highlights are “Vampire der Liebe”, “Dark Madonna”, and the newly released “Road”, which leans into more introspective, melancholic territory. The post‑punk core of the band surfaces in “City Of Firmaments”, “On The First Page”, and “Das Gespenst”, where sharp guitars and tense rhythms dominate. The electronic dimension takes centre stage in “Dead Diamond Machine” and “Red Dust”, before the album closes with the unexpected, blues‑tinged miniature symphony “Drunken Bird”.
Lyrically, Cold Cause navigate a world of fractured relationships, spectral presences, urban wanderings, and nocturnal reflections, all wrapped in a cinematic darkness that feels both intimate and unsettling.
Cold Cause released their debut single “Vampire der Liebe” on 13 February, followed by the new single “Road” on 13 March—two compelling first steps into a universe that promises much more to come. The third single, "Dead Diamond Machine", will be released on 10 April. To mark the occasion, Cold Cause will embark on a series of concerts across Europe. Link
