With a shared passion for Victoriana, history, and a touch of cyberpunk aesthetics, Codex Lovelace, the dark electronic-metal project led by Joan Avant and Holly Royle (Disconnected Souls), continues to build momentum following the release of its debut full-length album, Galvanised Heart. The duo has now unveiled a striking new video for the album's empowering track, "Queen".
Speaking about the release, Joan Avant explains: “'Queen' is a song of second chances. Despite the world you were born into, a pawn can become Queen.”
Driven by soaring melodies and powerful electronic rhythms, "Queen" uses the symbolism of a chessboard to explore themes of ambition, resilience, and transformation. As opposing forces carefully calculate their next moves amid struggles for power and control, the song delivers a defiant message of self-empowerment. It encourages listeners to challenge limiting social expectations, break free from restrictive systems, and pursue their full potential.
Produced by Joan Avant, the track is accompanied by a visually compelling video featuring Holly Royle, filmed by Tom Lloyd Media at Framework Studio in Manchester. The result is a cinematic companion piece that reinforces the song's message: no matter where you begin, strength, determination, and belief in oneself can change the course of the game. Link
