Death/doom metal outfit The Crawling have revealed an enthralling new video for "Bound To The Negative (Requiem)", one of two tracks featured on their recently released EP, What We Leave Behind.
Originally appearing on the band's acclaimed All Of This For Nothing full-length, "Bound To The Negative (Requiem)" sees the track completely reworked in acoustic form. The reimagined version adds new emotional depth and atmospheric weight, offering a markedly different perspective on the original composition. Guitarist and vocalist Andy Clarke explained how the unexpected reinterpretation came to life: "I received an acoustic guitar as a present, and initially wasn't really sure what to do with it. I sent it to my guitar tech to have it tuned down to B, so I could experiment with some existing Crawling songs. Almost immediately, I started playing 'Bound To The Negative', and it really lent itself to the acoustic arrangement. I recorded a version, didn't let anyone hear it, and it sat there for about a year. When we recorded 'A Song To Nurse The Sickness', we started thinking about putting together a release. The theme of nostalgia seemed to fit perfectly with revisiting 'Bound To The Negative'. We were looking back at a song we already knew, but rewriting and reinterpreting it, much like we do with our own memories. It wasn't something we'd planned. Everything just came together naturally, and the two songs made sense as a release. I found the prospect of releasing a song with entirely clean vocals quite unnerving. There's nowhere to hide without the death metal vocals, and it feels incredibly exposed. But we wanted to do it, so we did".
Discussing the accompanying video, Clarke revealed that he and The Crawling bassist Adrien Crozet filmed the clip during a cold and silent night, aiming to capture a sense of isolation and reflection: "For the video, I wanted to create something isolated, dark and melancholic, but with a real sense of space. Adrien and I went out around midnight and found somewhere in our city that was quiet, isolated and exposed. We had very limited lighting and only about twenty minutes to shoot because everything was running on batteries. That forced us to work quickly, and the whole thing is quite raw as a result. But it works. It came out exactly as I'd hoped. I think it captures the loneliness of looking back on things. No one knows how you see the past".
